Aqaba
Airport: King Hussein International Airport
Aqaba is a city on the coast of the Red Sea which attracts more and more visitors over the last few years, thanks to its position next to the King Hussein Bridge that has recently opened and connects it with Saudi Arabia, as well as for its many new luxury hotels. Aqaba is one of the oldest cities in Jordan, with a rich history beginning more than 3000 years ago. It was and still is an important trading seaport because of its unique location on the Red Sea and trade routes leading towards Egypt, Syria and Mesopotamia. Its port is the only one in the country, and the country’s only outlet to the Red Sea. Today the city has a population of 200,000 people and is the second-largest city in Jordan.
Aqaba has a wonderful mix between old and new and many sites to visit, such as the Aqaba Fortress, the Archaeological Museum and the Royal Palace. The city was half-destroyed in an earthquake in 1927 but has since been rebuilt and today still offers such historical sites as the Aqaba Castle, Aqaba Mosque, a Roman theater, Roman baths and more. There are many beaches in the city, with white sands and clear blue waters, offering a great experience to any tourist. Aqaba also features some of the best diving spots in the area, with coral reefs and underwater caves. Apart from diving, snorkeling and exploration of the reefs, you can also enjoy beach activities such as surfing and fishing. The best time to visit Aqaba is during the winter, when it is cool and pleasant, with temperatures around 10-25 degrees centigrade.
