Bergamo

Airport: Bergamo International Airport

Bergamo is a city in the north of Italy, at a distance of 50 km from Milan. It is the capital of the district and has around 120,000 residents. Bergamo was one of the most important cities in the north of Italy during the Middle Ages. It is famous for its beautiful architecture, which includes the Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica, one of the most important churches in the country. It is also well known for its cuisine, affected by the neighboring areas of Lombardia and Piemonte. Interesting tourist sites in the city include the Castello di San Vigilio and the Piazza Vecchia, one of the most ancient squares in the city. Bergamo’s economy today relies mainly on tourism and retail.

The city is divided roughly into two parts – the upper city and the lower city. The upper city is its more ancient part, and from it you can enjoy a vista of the lower city. It is full of structures dated to the Renaissance and Baroque periods and picturesque alleys. In it you’ll find the exquisite Palazzo Del Ragione. Not to be missed are the Cappella Colleoni and the Sant’Alessandro Catherdral, as well as the city’s fascinating museums, such as the Nature and Archaeology Museum. The upper city also features a pretty shopping promenade – the Corsarolla, where you can sit at a caffe, enjoy wonderful gelato or eat at one of the restaurants. Add to your tour a visit to the city’s ancient walls, which were recognized as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

A short trip in a funicular will take you to the lower and more modern part of the city, where you’ll find lively piazzas, excellent eateries and shopping opportunities in the shopping avenues and malls. The lower city also offers ancient buildings, churches and museums, galleries of classic and modern art, and many other attractions. A huge park – the Parco dei Colli, awaits just outside Bergamo, and you can also take walking and bicycle tours to nearby villages, the spa town of San Pellegrino and the Alps.
