Catania

Airport: Catania International Airport

Catania is the capital of Sicily and the biggest city on the island. It is located on Sicily’s eastern coast, at the foot of the Etna volcano. The city is full of history, culture and natural beauty. Its historic center was recognized as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1997 and is one of the most beautiful sites in Europe. It is also one of the most ancient places on the continent, where you can find monuments and structures dating back to the Roman Period. The Old City in Catania offers narrow alleys with archaic buildings, but also many shops and restaurants. Catania has a vivacious night scene as well, with many pubs and clubs scattered all over the city.

Catania sits on a plateau but has mountains surrounding it from every direction that provide it with gorgeous scenery that has earned it the nickname – Il Bel Paese – The Beautiful Country. The most iconic point in the city is Mount Etna, that dominates the skyline from almost any angle. It is an active volcano that last erupted in March 2017. One of the best ways to get a clue of Etna’s full glory is by taking an aerial tour over the city with a helicopter or going up the mountain in a cable car. The city also features an impressive Roman amphitheater, and you can also visit medieval structures, charming churches Santa Maria Del Carmelo and San Nicolo L’Arena, as well as the many museums, theaters and golden beaches.

Catania is also famous for its delicious cuisine, which includes pasta, pizza and seafood dishes such as calamari and Spigola (a kind of local fish), and, of course, the famous Arancini – rice balls filled with anything from meat to veggies and cheese, often fried and served with tomato or ragu sauce.

The city of Catania has been a regional trade center since days of yore because of its natural harbor and strategic location along ancient and modern trade routes of the Mediterranean. Its main economic activity is in trade and services, farming and production. Construction is one of the most important sections in Catania’s economy, due of its status as a popular tourist destination. The big seaport in the city supports this section with many connected businesses in the fields of shipbuilding, steel manufacturing, oil refinement and other petrochemical industries. The city has a lot to offer investors looking for business opportunities or to buy a property. Most of its properties are situated along the coastline, with a direct view to the sea. The areas in development have been greatly expanded over the past few years, the city is considered safe and has the most advanced infrastructure in the area.
