Catania is the capital of Sicily and the biggest city on the island. It is located on Sicily’s eastern coast, at the foot of the Etna volcano. The city is full of history, culture and natural beauty. Its historic center was recognized as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1997 and is one of the most beautiful sites in Europe. It is also one of the most ancient places on the continent, where you can find monuments and structures dating back to the Roman Period. The city also features an impressive Roman amphitheater, and you can also visit medieval structures, charming churches Santa Maria Del Carmelo and San Nicolo L’Arena, as well as the many museums, theaters and golden beaches.
Catania is also famous for its delicious cuisine, which includes pasta, pizza and seafood dishes such as calamari and Spigola (a kind of local fish), and, of course, the famous Arancini – rice balls filled with anything from meat to veggies and cheese, often fried and served with tomato or ragu sauce.
