Istanbul

Airport: Atatürk International Airport

Airport: Sabiha Gökçen International Airport

Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey and one of the highest-populated cities in Europe. It is situated right on the Bosphorus Strait, which connects the Black Sea with the Mediterranean. More than 15 million residents live in Istanbul, which has been an important cultural and economic center for centuries. It was founded by the Greeks as Byzantium, but its name was changed to Constantinople in 330 AD after being conquered by the Roman emperor Constantine I. The Ottomans conquered the city in 1453. They kept its name till the end of World War I, when it was changed to the Muslim name Istanbul after the Ottoman capital that lay on the other side of the Bosphorus.

The city’s strategic location on the trade routes to Asia and Europe has made it a major commercial center from its very beginning. It continued to grow over the years, with its walls being gradually pushed back to contain it. To this day, Istanbul is Turkey’s commercial, cultural and historical center, a bubbly cosmopolitan city. It has reached a territory of 5.5 million sq. meters and is still serving as a vital trade hub between Europe and Asia.

Istanbul is a city of opposites. The Bosphorus Straits divide it into two halves – European and Asian. There is so much to see and experience in the city. It is home to Aya Sofia and the Blue Mosque, two magnificent edifices that are architectural treasures from the Byzantine and Ottoman eras. Another must-see in the city is the breathtaking Topkapi Palace.

The Grand Bazaar is the most famous markets in Istanbul and one of the oldest markets in the world. It was built in 1461 by Sultan Mehmet II, and has since been burnt and rebuilt several times. The bazaar is huge, incorporating more than 60 streets over an area of 55,000 sq. meters. Another market, the Spices Market, is a wonderful place to explore for foodies and culinary professionals. It offers more than 200 stores selling spices, herbs, oils and other ingredients from all over the world, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe.

Istanbul was ranked as one of the 10 most toured cities of Europe in the past three years, and as one of the fastest growing economies in the world. It is home to some of the world’s largest companies, including Turkish Airlines, which flies more international passengers than any other airline on the planet. Istanbul is an international business center, ranked as the best city for residence in 2017 by the EIU. This makes it ideal for investment in real estate or other fields of business.
