Trieste is a city in north-east Italy, one of the central cities of the Friuli Venezia Giulia District, rated as one of the most important seaports in the Mediterranean because of its strategic spot at the crossroads between several countries and cultures. Its seaport is also one of the busiest in Italy in terms of cargo treatment capacity and economic significance. The city has been an important trade post for centuries, but only became part of Italy in 1867. Trieste is known for its unique architecture and history. Attractions in the city include the Roman Amphitheater, the Trieste Cathedral – Duomo di San Giusto, the San Francisco church the San Antonio church, the Pallazzo della Ragione and the Castello Miramare – a castle built by Archduke Maximillian in 1856 for his wife, Maria Theresa of Austria, to serve as her summer residence. The castle is preserved in its original form, including all furniture and artifacts. The cathedral and the Castello Miramare are World Heritage sites recognized by UNESCO. The city also offers many events and festivals throughout the year, such as the San Antonio festival.
Trieste has been the base for many industries over time, such as shipbuilding, steel manufacturing and oil refining.
