Medical transportation

An ambulance is a common mode of transportation used to transfer a patient to a hospital. But sometimes it is necessary to organize emergency transport to the hospital which is several thousand kilometers away. For such purposes, an air ambulance is used.

An air ambulance is an aircraft equipped to provide emergency medical care. It is designed to meet the needs of seriously injured or ill patients who are in an area inaccessible to other medical transport. Air ambulance may also be used when a patient needs treatment that cannot be provided by the local hospital to quickly transfer him to another facility.

History of medical air transportation

Air ambulances date back to the 20th century. Armed conflicts, or rather the great number of injured people required prompt transportation and, as a result, air logistics. In war, an air ambulance is invaluable when soldiers get serious injuries and time is of the essence.

First medical air transport was probably used in 1870 during the siege of Paris when 160 French troops were injured and were transported in balloons to France. During the First World War, air ambulances were used by various military organizations. The planes were still simple, with limited capabilities nevertheless, research continued, and in 1936 an air ambulance was used to evacuate the injured of the Spanish Civil War for treatment in Germany.

In 1928, the first official air ambulance was established in Australia. And in 1934, a civilian air ambulance was established in Africa in Morocco.

Civilian medical air transportation

Nowadays the air ambulance is not only used for military purposes. There are civil air ambulances as well. Transportation of a patient by air ambulance is fast, safe, and takes place under the constant supervision of medical staff. Such aircrafts are equipped according to the “from bed to bed” principle. The boards are equipped with facilities to monitor the patient's health and to provide emergency medical care to patients including ventilators, medicine, ECG, and stretchers. It has a highly qualified team of medical professionals. Doctors can provide emergency medical care to the patient in the air if necessary. The pilot is also well trained, as sometimes aircraft maneuvers that are not common in non-emergency flights are required.

What makes medical air transportation effective?

An air ambulance has many advantages. Such transportation does not depend on the condition of the roads and the traffic jams and allows you to quickly take the patient to the hospital.
