Izmir

Airport: International Airport Izmir Adnan Menderes

Izmir is the third-largest city in Turkey with more than 3 million people residing in it. It is also one of the most ancient cities in the world, with some sources dating it to 3000 BC. Izmir used to be called Smyrna, and it has been a successful commercial center for centuries thanks to its location on the coast of the Aegean Sea, next to the Gediz River Delta, and due to its proximity to Antalya. Izmir has several natural harbors that allow it to play an important role in world trade. Today Izmir is one of the most developed and growing cities in Turkey, home to many international companies and organizations.

Izmir belonged to many cultures throughout history, including the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans. You can now see the city’s heritage in its architecture, featuring mosques, churches and many other kinds of ancient monuments. Modern Izmir developed around its old core, with a number of municipal parks built around its historical attractions. One such well-known site is the Smyrna Gate, built by Alexander the Great and used as an entrance for travelers coming into the city in ancient times. The place later served as a prison to hold criminals sentenced to crucifixion or stoning. It survived, and today is one of the most visited spots in Izmir. A visit to Izmir’s Archaeology Museum is highly recommended. The museum presents artifacts from all historical period, from Ancient Troy and Crete. You can also visit the Islamic monument of Karatay Madrasa and the Karşıyaka fishermen’s wharf.

Izmir’s economic development is based on international trade and tourism, as well as a large agricultural sector producing milk products, poultry and cattle. In Izmir you’ll also find the headquarters of Turkish and International companies and conglomerates such as GAP and Coca Cola. It is attractive to investors because of its strategic position and its reasonable living prices. It features a skilled workforce and developed infrastructure, and in the last few years has been nicknamed “the next Asian tiger.”
